Upper Passaic River Snag Report
In July and August 2011, PRC staff member Allyson and summer intern Jason hiked and canoed down the Upper Passaic River from King George Road, Basking Ridge to Main Street, Chatham Boro. They were in search of snags.
Snags are trees that have fallen into the river and when large enough can trap debris and alter the river's flow. As Allyson and Jason traveled down the river they photographed every snag they came across and recorded its location with a GPS unit. In total they mapped 130 snags of varying sizes. The results of their expedition are contained in the documents below.
The PRC started this project in response to concerns about the snags making canoe and kayak use of the river very difficult and the potential for some large snags to exacerbate local flooding. The PRC is working with the communities along the river to develop a plan to remove some of the major snags from the river.
